Orientation and Mobility

Applying for Certification if you already hold a Master's Degree

If you have a Master's degree and are seeking certification in orientation and mobility, you will apply as a non-degree seeking student.

What do I need to apply?

  •  A Master's degree in teaching students who are blind or visually impaired, in rehabilitation teaching of persons who are blind or visually impaired, or a related degree from an accredited university.
  • Successful completion of all prerequisite courses (SERP 503, SERP 520, SERP 521, SERP 522) or their equivalents.

 

What is the application process? 
 
1. Write a brief letter of interest to the Coordinator, Programs in Visual Impairment. Your letter should contain the following:
  • Your contact information including address, telephone number, and e-mail address.
  • The semester that you wish to begin your program.
  • The date of the last semester that you were enrolled at the University of Arizona, if appropriate.
  • Your educational and experience as these relate to teaching students who are blind or visually impaired.
  • The dates you completed prerequisite coursework.
  • Your reasons for wanting to become an Orientation and Mobility Specialist and why you feel that you would be successful in this profession.

2. Include three sealed letters of recommendation with your letter of interest.

3. Complete and submit to the University of Arizona Graduate College a non-degree application form. Click here for application information and to download the application form from the University of Arizona's Graduate College web site. Your application must be received by February 1 in order to be considered for the following fall semester.

4. Complete an interview with the Coordinator, Programs in Visual Impairment, who will contact you after your letter of interest and letters of recommendation have been reviewed.

You will be notified by mail regarding your acceptance into the program.
